The Baker and the Chimney Sweep
(or The Sweep and the Miller), was a popular pantomime skit in British music halls of the 1880s. Two workmen, one covered in soot, the other in flour, are rivals for the attentions of the same lucky housemaid. Bumping into each other on the street, they get into a tussle…
Comedic violence between working-class stereotypes was a feature of Victorian stage productions which became important in early film comedy. This simple story with its black-and-white/good-and-evil/yin-yang imagery translated perfectly into the then new language of black-and white cinema. Two early short films of the story survive today, an English version from 1898, followed by an American version c1900-1902.

Today the original painting is on semi-permanent loan to the Brooklyn Safehouse, an atmospheric pub in the waterfront neighborhood of Greenpoint.
The print version is exactly half the scale of the original painting.

These five prints are the first group to be reproduced from the 21 original paintings commissioned for the covers of the Aubrey-Maturin novels by English author Patrick O’Brian. Written over a span of 35 years and published in 24 languages, the beloved books have sold over 4 million copies, inspired the 2003 Hollywood blockbuster film Master and Commander, and achieved a devoted, almost cult-like following worldwide.
